The Festival provides a glimpse of the current state of new film and video tendencies in the region and the world. The idea of “Alternative” is about work that does not fall into easy categorizations, and that operates counter to dominant commercial and aesthetic trends.
As a meeting place for artists, theorists, critics and audiences, the Festival’s goal is to record and theoretically define movements, promote constructive values and support new creative possibilities in visual media. Films and videos which are selected for the List of Significant Achievements will be screened at non-commercial screenings in Serbia and abroad as festival promotion.ĪLTERNATIVE FILM/VIDEO is an international Festival established in 1982.

SCREENING FORMAT: digital file, blu-ray, DVDīy participating in the Festival works become part of the ALTERNATIVE FILM ARCHIVE and are accessible for research in the Archive and for presentations of the Festival in different venues both in Serbia and internationally (with artist consent). All works in a language other than English should have English subtitles. Single-channel videos and films up to 20 minutes produced in 20 are welcomed. Innovative experimental, exploratory, avant-garde, personal and political works can be submitted to the competition.
ONLINE SUBMISSION: Guidelines for submissions can be found at the end of this text. This year’s edition will not have a specific theme for the competition program. The festival jury will decide on the List of Significant Achievements, no more than five works, which include the opportunity for a residency in the following year at Academic Film Center at Students’ City Cultural Center in Belgrade. The selection committee, according to the Festival regulations, will choose the films and videos for the competition. A majority of the program will be showcased online, and in case of a more favorable situation some of the programs will be shown live.ĪLTERNATIVE FILM/VIDEO 2020 invites artists from around the world, including the region and Serbia, to submit their film and video works for the competition section of ALTERNATIVE FILM/VIDEO. ALTERNATIVE FILM/VIDEO 2020 will take place from 9-13 December at Students’ City Cultural Center in Belgrade, as a hybrid edition.
